Penny Metal - the original Mad Tunes DJ

'Penny Metal is a DJ extraordinaire, boldly playing tunes no one else dares. Her passion for Eastern European and Russian music shines through in the eclectic sets she unleashes on her audiences. Expect a joyful journey of surprises and wonderful tunes, always presented with a big smile'

When I first started djing Eastern European music in 1995 people would laugh at me especially as I am English. I started in a squatted railway arch with a twin tape deck, two cassettes of Romanian folk music, 20 bottles of vodka and a bunch of people who danced so much they fell over. My tunes became known as 'Mad Tunes' for their astonishingly exuberant spirit; well how would you describe a really fast Romanian fiddle tune? Or a rousing Russian tune that starts so slowly and ends so fast you don't know where to put your feet?

As a DJ my mission has always been to take these tunes and play them to people who never get to hear them. My mixes consist of horas, polkas, srytakis, kolos, tarantellas, klezmer, Russian ska and Ukrainian pop. I have a reputation for unleashing the most unusual tunes on an unsuspecting audience!

I am currently enjoying playing in Europe. At nights such as 'Soviet Reunion' to 'Loss: a night of Exquisite Misery' in London, Divan du Monde in Paris, to SchliwoBeatz and the OstFest in Vienna, BalkanBeats and BalkanXPress to the Köpi and the MS Stubnitz in Germany, and festivals in the UK and Italy.

Wooo! I love it!
